Gift Ideas

I am really struggling with what to buy for Mike for Christmas (or, as we celebrate it, generic winter gift-giving holiday) this year. We are both people who typically just buy whatever we want for ourselves at the time we decide that we want it, and he gets a better discount for the technological/music-oriented stuff that he wants, so I'm drawing a big old blank.

I think he wants to start doing more cooking at home (he just brought home a huge soup cookbook last week), so I was thinking about getting a food processor, but, seriously, how boring is that? I need to get him something fun and inventive. I'm usually better at this sort of thing, but I've totally blanked.

Any suggestions? So far all that I've come up with are personalized expensive golf balls that he wanted (he gave me that selection) and some Harry and David food stuff that he won't enjoy as much as I will (I get that stuff for us every year when I'm sending in the order for my other family members). Help!!

I'm pretty sure this is stupid, but could you see what soups he's particularly interested in from the cookbook and do a kind of basket with the stuff for it? Or put it all in a large pot (suitable for making soup), if you don't already have one? Though, that seems kind of like getting someone a vacuum cleaner or lawn mower for Christmas -- "Hey! Do some chores!!" But he seems to like cooking sometimes, and it would be a homey activity for the day.

Like I said, this is probably stupid.

I'm not sure whether he knows you're blogging here and will see the cool gift ideas posted here, but I trust you will see the comments first and use the x'ing tool appropriately. So I would get him a xxxxxxxx or a xxxxxxx, perhaps with the blue xxxxxxx or the extra motor.

I don't encourage him to read my blog. I mentioned to him that I started one, but he is not particularly interested in such things.

fringey, I like the soup ideas (especially putting the ingredients in a new nice pan of some sort. We'll see if I'm organized enough to follow through with it though.

You can address me by my real name if you want. :) I just screwed up my real email/name when I signed up for Google talk. Let me know if you want to shop or whatever for the soup pot. I have to go to Sur La Table (OK, I spelled that wrong I think) by you all this weekend so that I can get what I am supposed to get for my dad (vacuum sealed container for coffee beans). You should be able to get most/all ingredients at the Whole Foods by you.
