Part of the Process

I received my first-ever jury summons in the mail a couple of weeks ago and ended up spending the day at the LA Superior Courthouse yesterday. I am a potential juror in a 6 week long civil trial and I have to go to court next Wednesday to find out whether I'll be selected for the jury or not. I assume that the plaintiffs won't want me on the panel, but I guess you never know. If I have to serve, at least I'm sure I'll end up with some good blog fodder after the trial is over.

It is probably not a good sign regarding career satisfaction that the thought of 6 weeks sitting in court sounds like a nice break from the billable hour, huh? Of course, it would cause me to miss a couple of trips that I've been planning, so I sort of hope I'm not selected.

Congratulations! I wish I would get called to jury duty -- it can't help but make you a better lawyer. Of course, that prospect probably doesn't excite you very much, but it would excite me.

Six weeks is a very long time to be away from a regular job, though.

A co-worker is serving as a juror on a four-month criminal trial right now. It's nice to have an employer who will put up with that.

So are you going to be on the jury or not?!?!?!?!

I'll be really, really shocked if they pick you. I've known a few attorneys in L.A. who made it to voir dire, but none who ever ended up on the jury. Me, I just sat in a room all day and tried to do some billable work.
